Remembering Gary Hughes
The Georgia Scouts Association mourns the passing of Gary Hughes, a legendary scout who impacted so many people in the scouting industry. The GSA extends its deepest condolences to Gary’s family and all of those who knew Gary and his impact.
On this page, we have included some memories from folks around the game, as well as a statement from Gary’s son Sam Hughes on the launch of the Gary Hughes Keep Swinging Foundation.
“As many of you know, our father, Gary Hughes, passed away recently, after a battle with cancer. He was a larger than life man, who loved his family, the game of baseball, and had legions of amazing friends.
To honor his legacy, we are starting the Gary Hughes Keep Swinging Foundation. If you’ve ever left our dad a voicemail, you’d hear his upbeat recording...”I’m on the move right now...leave me a message and keep swinging!” It somehow encapsulated his dynamic positivity, love of baseball and his ‘don’t give up/keep going for it’ spirit. The Gary Hughes Keep Swinging Foundation will be focused on offering a scholarship for an underprivileged student to attend his beloved Serra High School. Those of you who knew our dad know that his connection to Serra High School was deep and that it represented so many attributes that defined him - friendship, faith, family. In the spirit of one good deed changing someone’s life, a scholarship to Serra was what he wanted to bring to fruition as part of his legacy.

“Gary is the father of Sam Hughes (New York Yankees National Crosschecker). Gary was a good man. He hired me with Montreal in 1985.
I learned a lot from Gary. He was a great teacher and had more patience than anyone I know. He always listened to what you had to say about a player or to just have someone to talk with. He was a Scout’s Scout!
We, the scouting family, have lost a dear friend. For those of us who had the honor of working for Gary & just knowing him, he will forever be remembered and missed.”
